Recently, on our Glitterfest poster delivery quest, Dianne & I found ourselves in Fullerton. Like Mother like Daughter was the 1st stop. This is a lovely antique store full of pristine treasures! Everything is beautifully displayed & the prices very nice!

Next, was this store a few doors down called "The Doll Trunk". This amazing star is in the front window! It works! It is priced @ $1500.00. For something so fabulous, it is a pittance, but still to rich for my blood. Yes, I want it, but groceries are more important! If you are interested, the owner did say it was negotiable.........

Travelin' Down South!

Earlier this week the Whimzy girls had the chance to get out and about. There is nothing like a day trip to infuse you with more creative energy!

Our first stop was Vignette's in Ocean Beach. The owner of this beautiful shop, Lori is really one of the nicest people you ever want to meet. She is warm, friendly and genuinely happy to see you! She told us all about the upcoming Valentine's event with Meryl Schoenbaum on February 11th. It sounds FABULOUS! I think I might have to escape there for the day!

This is my favorite spot, the entry. The most beautiful chandies and sconces cover the walls and ceilings.

I think I could find a spot for everything here!

Being a crown girl, this is now on my wish list.

The head piece was amazing!

We then hit Hodad's for burgers and frings.

This is a "Triple D" stop and sooooo worth the calories!

We stopped down in the Solana Beach area. "Bon-Bon" is a warehouse style home decor place with the best in furniture, rugs, lighting, and pillows! Here is the site!

Baby Doll Class with Robin Dudley Howes

Here is the beginning-we add the armature to attach the doll body~

Next, we built a bead wrap accent to continue up~

We next added this sterling bead and a magnificent fish piece~

Squeezed the velvet link and 2 bronze bead dangles~

And then we wired wrapped the velvet. I have done the other side here too~

And this shows the tumbled shell bead as well as its 2 transitions. Now we are free to add the dangles!

This was a great technique filled class! Robin is a master-teacher and extremely patient! I learned tons and love, love, love my baby doll necklace! I will be investing in finer tools to be sure! Check your stocking next year! If you are on my list, one of these may turn up for you!

I realized today that I have not posted anything for ages! My apologies! The holiday season, 2 fleamarkets a month, and everything else just piled right up on me. Rest assured, Whimzy is going strong as Dianne and I plot and plan out 2012. Glitterfest is just around the corner, so mark your calendars! It is not the same without you there!

Some of you may be familiar with the Old Town Shop "The Vintage Lady". Sadly, Owner Cathy Jarell lost her beautiful little shop to a fire last month. This is devastating, not only to Cathy, but to the Old Town community too! She is a matriarch of our area and things are just not the same with out her! She will be joining us at the next Vintage Fleamarket on January 22nd. Please come down and show your support for this fabulous lady!

Class with Cheryl & Rita

Last Saturday Rita Reade & Cheryl Waters came to play @ Whimzy! Let me tell you. these ladies do not mess around! The table was beautifully set-up with the most amazing goodies that for the first time my cupcakes did not steal the show!

The project was a soldered canvas shadowbox. Lots of fun techniques, ingredients, and GLITTER!

First we gave the upside-down canvas some color and texture. Next we cut-out and embellished the cute little birds. As you can see here, the canvas really works well for the shadowbox. By this time, my mind is thinking up all kinds of goodies to do up this way!!!

We then cleaned our glass, applied the copperfoil, and soldered away!

Finally, we added all kinds of wonderful trims and things to the outside! Voila! Project complete!

Halloween has always held a special place for Dianne & me. We used to spend weeks planning out the decorations. We would make our own spiders and webs. We even made our own dead bodies to decorate the front porch.

Our Dad used to dress up as Frankenstein to hand out candy. He is 6'5", needless to say he was very scary!
I remember how he would put flashing lights in the trees so our house had lightning, and a thunder soundtrack to go with! He carved pumpkins with us too. My Dad always made Halloween extra fun.

We have worked long hours creating spooky magic for Whimzy! Hand decorated Coffin candy boxes, fabulous doll heads, old scientific wonders, ravens, Haunted photos, and more fill the shoppe with frightful fun! Stop in and say "BOO!" won't you?

Our Gypsy Mermaid!

We had the exotic Robin Dudley-Howes at Whimzy recently and let me tell you something! That girl is all that! She is a fabulous teacher, an amazing artist, and above all, a person who is generous and authentic.

Robin joined us to teach her "Mermaid Cuff" class. An experience of wire wrapping, beading, fabric and more. Each student did a fabulous creation of their very own. Each as unique as its creator, which I think is the best part of a class!

Robin has the best treasure. I tried to steal this, but she caught me!

Tools, tools, tools! Robin always brings a new tool for her students to try out!

It really helps to stand back and study your piece as you go!

OMG! Cute kits or what!? Robin makes cute displays for her pieces too!

Oooooooo! S-P-A-R-K-L-Y!

Artist Julie Nutting joined us for a class last Saturday! Let me tell you this lady is FABULOUS! We had a full house and so much fun creating her "Collage Couture" canvas piece! The girls learned so much. Everyone came out with a truly original piece of work!

Julie now has a book! I was lucky enough to have a moment to browse through it during class. It is chock full of her creations as well as instructions. I had no idea how many of these gorgeous collages she has done! Each with it's very own feeling. The colors are marvelous! The subjects are beautiful! Julie is amazing! Red Riding Hood was back!

Last Saturday, we had the wonderful Polka Dot Pixie back @ Whimzy! Jenny Hernandez spent a few hours and had a lot of fun teaching her Red Riding Hood Project. Here are some shots of the students contructions!

Coptic Journals with Jenelle Van de Mortel

Saturday I was lucky-ducky to take Jenelle's Journal making class. I rarely get to play so I was very excited to spend the day being creative with the other students!

Jenelle is very energetic, fun, and artful! As I am sure you can see by the table setting!

Isn't it lovely!

Here I have just applied gesso to the journal covers.

Terry does the "flapper" to help her journal covers dry!

Here I have painted, glazed, and decoupaged the front. I have also painted, textured and glammed up the back cover. Jenelle knows so much about some many products! Many are new to me and will soon be added to my creative arsenal!

Here is the crepe medallion to decorate the front!

Next, we learned the art of sew in the "signature" of pages using the kettle stitch. Jenelle made this very complicated method very easy!

The stitches form a beautiful chain like stitch along the spine of the book.

Robin Howes visited Whimzy! on Saturday and brought lots of fun tools, trinkets, and talk!

This class was a serious technique based lesson! The students learned to use a dapping block and hammer~

That is a bottle cap she is pounding on.

The students then learned to use a drill properly. Now they can put holes in whatever they want!

Here Jenelle is learning how to copper foil her bottle caps together for a charm.

Robin Demos her soldering techniques. Then everyone else gets to try!

Time to flatten and texture this soon to be charm!

Pokin' Around Pasadena(the way Jed the Fish says it!)

Last week Di & I and my daughter headed out to Pasadena. We have been wanting to get out there, but as many of you know we just never seem to get out anywhere!

Our first stop was "Zinnia". We made excellent time and Pasadena isn't as far away as I thought. We had a little time to waste so we stopped into "Mix & Match".

Inside they have a fantastic selection of cereals. You can combine them however you want! Several choices of milk also! On top of that you can order a grilled cheese sandwich just about any way possible! We decided upon shepherds bread, american and provolone cheeses, and BACON!

IT WAS FABULOUS!!! After the sandwich we Dianne spied a box of "Quisp". I don't know how many of you remember it but it was one of our childhood favorites!

Well we bought a nice sized snack container to keep us company! Anyway, Zinnia was open by now so we mosied on over and enjoyed this creative and artful store. Full of findings and goodies. Some beautiful artwork from several different artists. The artist working that day was ever-so friendly, allowing us to take some pics and telling us all about the things they do at Zinnia.

This is the lampshade over the counter. Isn't it amazing?????!!!!! They offer a big selection of classes as well. All very reasonable! Check it out here.
I am sorry I do not remember the gentleman's name, but Dianne did buy one of his art pieces which is really superb!

Next it was on to "Gold Bug". This is a store on the darker side of art. Full of unusual items to say the least. Amazing jewelry, very rare and antique book plates, steam punk sculpture(that watches you with eyes!), some really amazing leather clothing, and some dioramas depicting bugs living as we so. WITH REAL BUGS! Having tea, sleeping doing laundry and such. Very different and very cool!

Just Too Busy!

So sorry it has been so long! For those of you who do not know Whimzy! sponsors Glitterfest! That means Dianne and I are seriously "on" for the 8 weeks prior to the event. After the sparkles fade away we both find we are a little lost! It took me 2 weeks to figure out what I was supposed to be doing with myself every day!

On top of this, I have recently quit my job. So, I was doubly lost! When my brain was eventually able to function, I could see all the things that have been neglected over the last months! Overwhelming, does not even begin to describe it!

So, what does one do when she is completely adrift? First, she finds something chocolatey and indulgent, and then she gets dirty! Yes! Time to weed and trim and hack and plan. Because, I will tell you what, if there isn't a lovely, peaceful place to think and snack-Glitterfest, Whimzy!, art, and fun are not going to happen!

Spring is here! And slowly I am finding myself. Today I washed the windows. Currently the sun is setting and I can actually see it! Which is really saying something! Tomorrow? Well, let's not get ahead of ourselves! We will have to wait and see.............!

Sherri the Fairy Queen visits Whimzy!

Last weekend the talented Sherri Baldy visited Whimzy!

We recently had a fun class with Denise Hahn! Not only did we create these "LOVE"-ly banners, but Denise pulled a few more tricks out of her hat!

These were the Goodie box Kits she brought for the class! So cute! Very organized!

Here is the class sample. It had many details to it and Denise made each step simple!

Assembly went smoothly!

Here is one of the bonus projects Denise brought for class! A little ballerina bottle. They were sooooo cute! Ballerina, bottle, bling, buds and super simple!

More Estate Treasure!

Is this frame not adorable?! It stands only 3" tall! I am sure I could find someone fabulous to put into it! I tried to stick it into my pocket more than once on Sunday!
Needless to say, I got caught! My bad luck is your gain.......if you hurry!

This porcelain crown is a treasure unto itself! It is in magnificent condition and looking for a good home.....

This unique item is a glass hand sculpture. It is signed and really beautiful! It could make a fabulous paperweight!

New @ Whimzy!

Dianne has been busy collecting wonderful unique items for Whimzy! This amazing little ballerina is one of them! She is about 7 to 8 cinches high. Her arms and legs are cotton bunting. Her face is cotton too, but different from her lovely limbs. She wear a gorgeous satin dress and is adorned by a sparkling crown.

New to Whimzy! are these marvelous porcelain legs! Several sets in many different sizes to make dolls from or use in an artful project! I think I may need a set for my desk! They are wonderful!

I love that some are crossed and others have pantaloons! So much fun! The small ones could be dressed into a necklace! What a conversation piece that would be!

Saturday, Whimzy! was lucky to play host to Jenny Hernandez, the Polka Dot Pixie! She brought all her artful goodies with her to teach a class on paper-clay sculpting. Here are some photos of the FUN!

Is this FANTASTIC or what!

A few months ago a friend of mine, Marian Ballog, asked me to participate in a vintage "ABC" swap. I hesitated, naturally being the commitment phobe I am! But the lure of having this magnificent handmade book drew me in! I have never done a swap before, so I did not know what to expect.

What letter do you think I chose? "W" of course!(Whimzy!) I did not sleep for days, dreaming only of things that begin with the letter "W"!

The due date for the swap was late September. Can you say "Glitterfest"? Yes, my pages were late! But what I got in return, well here are the first photos!

This is how everything arrived-wrapped up so prettily! Marian is very detail oriented!

This is a wonderful little flip box with my collage and my 1st grade photo on it that Marian created for me!

These are some gifts from the other letter girls! Very sweet!

This is the book in a customized bag. Notice all the little ABC details!

And here is the actual book! Marian used an old book cover for the front, our 1st grade photos for the table of contents, and each page is full of treasures from the letter girls! Stay tuned for pics of some of the actual pages!

Discovering New Places!

One of the best parts of having a shop is R & D (research and development!). Sometimes the creative balloon pops and you just have to get out and see the world! That is exactly what we did this past week-headed down San Diego way to discover new and creative places.

Our main stop was Vignettes. I have heard many wonderful things about this shoppe and was NOT disappointed!

This place is loaded with magnificent goodies! Each room is full of sparkling wonder!

Not only fabulous merchandise, but fabulous prices!

And so artfully displayed!

And, of course, once you are all shopped out you must eat!

We also stopped in the surrounding shoppes which were full of fun stuff too!

On the way back home we hit Cedros Ave in Solana Beach. This is a fantastic blend of designer and vintage style shoppes. Out of the Blue was a favorite. Hard to describe like Whimzy! is. If you like Whimzy! You will like Out of the Blue.

So, keep yours eyes peeled for the next shop reset! Now, that we are freshly inspired, you may just be too!

Celebrating 6 years and New Classes at WHIMZY!

This weekend October 23 & 24 Whimzy! is celebrating 6 years

of sparkly goodness!

We are offering food and fun, shopping and socializing! The fun begins Saturday at 10:00 am and runs through our Vintage Fleamarket on Sunday! Old Town Tustin is hosting the Artwalk as well. The center we are located in will be the Wine Tasting Pavilion. You can eat, drink, shop and view art all within a few blocks!

Additionally, we have added several new classes to our schedule. Many happening before the holidays! Photastic Phood!

This is a wonderful place that Dianne and I are currently addicted to! Photastic (Fa-tastic) in Huntington Beach is owned by Trinh. She is a super friendly and very talented lady! The menu offers sandwiches, salads, & of course Pho"! She also has a amazing variety of desserts that are french inspired!

We love the grilled pork sandwich! Grilled peppered pork, mayo, cucumber, cilantro, carrot & daikon top this beauty! It is all served on a fresh baked french roll! We also loved the chicken salad-an amazing blend of viet-french flavors.

Oh Photastic also offers little shrimp rolls with ginger dipping sauce! So tasty!

Dessert is a must! I crave the pineapple upsidedown cake, while Dianne likes the pear breadpudding!

Robin Dudley Howes Artist of Found Treasures

Robin came to Whimzy! on Sunday to share the making of her gorgeous tube earrings!

She is a wonderful teacher-very patient and extremely knowledgeable. Each pair of earrings came out perfect and each pair had personality of its own.

She brought new tools to many of us as well as an assortment of pieces and parts. Robin has an easy way about her. She uses terms that are simple to remember.

All in all it was a very successful day! How often do you come out with vintage style earrings, new friends AND amazing homemade cookies?

Tustin Historical Home Tour

Today was the Tustin Home Tour with Tustin's Historical Society. Whimzy was honored to host a booth there to let folks know what's happening!

There were 5 homes, 2 churches, and 3 gardens on the tour.

We set up a beautiful table featuring "Glitterfest" of course, and our favorite little doggy for the JasVil Fleamarket.
If anyone has a name suggestion for this little pooch,
please send it too me! He appears in our ads with
a thought balloon that says
"I beggin' you to take me to the fleamarket!"

I met so many friendly folks! It was quiet at times, so I was able to catch up on my magazine reading as well as sketching projects for my table at Glitterfest. I also had these EXTREMELY yummy cookies! Don't they look smashing with WWC? The sugar even matches the cover! Can you tell that I might have had a little too much of that yummy sugar? :)

All in all it was a fine day for meeting new people, sitting in the sun, and enjoying artistic moments, just me and my little muse!

Sunday was the JasVil Fleamarket at Whimzy! One of the things I love most about the fleamarket is even though I go out with ideas of what I am looking for, I ALWAYS find something else! These skate keys (& one fireplace key) just spoke to me and I had to have them! I received all these for just five bucks!

After wandering a bit more I found this old vase which is perfect for the boughs of heavy headed roses that are taking over my yard right now!

A few steps more and I picked up a really beautiful flower frog. Currently it is holding up the flowers in the photo of the vase! Did you know that flower frogs also work upside-down? If there are holes all the way through and it won't fit into the vase flip it and see if it works! All this fun for just $15.00! YAY!

Charm Necklaces Abound!

Today Sherry Goodloe visited Whimzy! and taught this very fun and creative class! One of the things I love most about Sherry is the imaginative tricks she always has up her sleeve! :)

We had wonderful kits to work from, as Sherry is very organized. We each received a "Zentangle" bookmark as a gift. These feature our initial and were handmade by Sherry herself!

Sherry showed us how to create each charm reflecting our own tastes and talents. These were very easy to do-once I decided what was to go on each! Once each charm was finished it was time to place them onto the necklace. I think this was the hardest part for me! Deciding what goes where!
And here is the finished necklace! I am thrilled with mine as was each of the girls in the class. It is very lightweight, personal, and really beautiful! I hope to have her back soon to not only teach this class again, but another class featuring a bird themed shadow box. Sherry tells me the shadow box class involves several great techniques. I always enjoy Sherry and she is very generous with herself, her knowledge and her praise! Thanks girlfriend for such a special day!

Fleamarket Finds!

One of the best parts of hosting the Jamestown Village Vintage Fleamarket is seeing all the amazing finds! There is always someone who finds an item they have been searching for for so long at a F A B U L O U S price. They love to share their big score with Dianne and I when they stop into Whimzy!

February's Fab Find was a book of Civil War plates. All in color, from 1908. Soliders on horse back, in battle and conference all told about 30 plates for just $20.00! The collector value of each print is $10.00 each! So for the little investment of $20.00, this saavy fleamarketer's purchase is worth $300.00! We LOVE stories like that and hope to hear many more!

Mini Crown Inspiration

I been having so much fun creating little fancies! You just never know where inspiration will strike! And when it does you hope that is is truly yours! Sometimes in that twilight zone of sleep, when my brain finally calms down, the most amazing images coalesce, no drugs either! The key is to remember the thought the next morning. Sometimes it won't come to me no matter what I do! Other times it does and the creating begins. The tradtional Maypole Celebration was the key! These things never turn out exactly as I pictured. As an artist, that is part of the journey, but I always enjoy the twists and turns each project takes to completion!

Winter Wire Crown

January was the opportune time for me to get my head around teaching a wire crown class. Bending wire is something I have done for years and I really don't think about what I am doing when I do it! So, by breaking it down step by step for my students it allows me to see it from a different perspective.

My student was the lovely and very fun Joleen Dismo! We had a great time together creating my Winter Wire Wonder! As well as getting to know eachother. Joleen not only makes crowns, but she does custom embroidery. She puts together personalized specialty baby gifts for showers & such!

It was a truly relaxing afternoon. Creating, chocolate, and a new friend! Thank you Joleen!

The next class is on February 7th 11 to 2 for my
Queen of Hearts Party Hat! It will be on display this weekend during the JasVil Fleamarket. Stop by, say "Hi!", and take a peek!

Have you been to the Jamestown Village Vintage Fleamarket? It is a smaller venue that features merchants from all over. They bring wonderful wares , tiny treasures, and unique findings right to Whimzy's doorstep! Dianne and I love the 4th Sunday of the month! Not only because we only need step out of the door to shop, but because we get to spend time with our regular visitors! I have learned so much from all of these friendly people! Advice from a retired teacher, future real estate projections, remedies for colds, and recipes for fantastic food. All of this from our little fleamarket! Yes, it is the shopping, but more importantly it's the melange of unique people you dig through to find the real treasures!

Well, Glitterfest Fall has come and gone and with it's passing I shed a little tear of regret that it's over so soon. I cannot express the wealth I feel sharing an afternoon with so many beautiful, creative and downright nice women! Every one of the artists at Glitterfest is a true treasure in themselves. So willing to share their knowledge and experience, their craft and techniques, and a bit of themselves along the way. I was in awe of each of them! What a wonderful sparkley, spooky collection of whimsy! I want to say "Thanks" to each of them as well as to each person that attended our event. I hope you had as enchanting a day as I did! I especially want to thank my friend Stacey Steimle. Not only is she full of energy, grand ideas, & advice, but she is consistantly there to keep me focused and on task! She is my other "rock" and for that I am truly indebted to her! Keep your eyes open for Glitterfest Spring...it won't be long now!

I don't know where the obsession with paper came from. Maybe my early scrapbooking days when I was introduced to Creative Memories. I remember a door opening in my mind and the light shining through it. All the magical possibilities, at only $.99 a sheet!

Part of the fun of being a Glitterfest Hostess is the opportunity to spoil our artists. Dianne and I really enjoy coming up with little special mementos to commemorate this special day. Above is the beginnings, actually the middle-ings of the Artist pins.

For those of you who don't know us well, my sister and I have a little shoppe in Tustin called "Whimzy". Through the shoppe we have met many, many amazingly talented people. Over time and conversation "Glitterfest" emerged as a wonderful fun way to get all these creative souls together. This brings us new creative souls as good word spreads and things move along. I can not emphasize enough how truly enchanting our first "Glitterfest" was! And now as we embark on "Glitterfest Fall" Dianne and I find ourselves planning for Spring already!

All this goodness just makes me was to do more! In these times it is so important to have things to look forward to and I for one, am counting the days until October 10th. Sometimes in a major tizzy because I am running out of time and sometimes in sparkling anticipation of meeting so many new people!

You know, I really enjoy all the processes that Glitterfst requires. As an artist, I am always attempting to make everything for our artists special in some little way, just to let them know how excited I am they are joining me for a truly magical day!

I just completed the first cache of packages for our group. Mind you, it took several days and many tense muscles, but they have been graciously released into the world to surprise and motivate all the creatives muses of Glitterfest!

I have been "artistic" since Kindergarten. My first big break came when fingerpainting in class. The collective faculty was very impressed with my piece and decided it should hand in the teachers lounge for my entire elementary career. It was returned to me during 5th grade commencement and is now a memory on film.

That label has stuck with me and although I take great pride in it sometimes it is quite a burden. Being artistic puts you in a different light, expectations from others as well as yourself are elevated and the pressure is on! Inspiration strikes at the strangest moments and I find it very difficult to get them out the way I see them. I guess that is the journey!

I am surrounded by creative people, many of whom do not acknowledge their talents. This is a common affliction, especially among my women friends. I often do the same thing, never feeling quite "original" enough, "inventive" enough, and the pressure builds to be something more.
I guess this too, is part of the journey.

So, in honor of those many women who put themselves out there and in doing so, show me they have what it takes , I am making a solemn vow to spend more time on my art and less time criticizing it. I vow to see the uniqueness in whatever I do and to acknowledge the inspirations that come from all the truly wonderful gals that never stop dreaming of what is on their personal artistic horizon!

New to Whimzy are these artful little furniture creations by Wendy Addison! Constructed of board and newsprint style paper, they stand and stack into creative little sculptures elevating the every day to elegance. Stack them, use them for display stands, or just each by itself, these little paper productions add that unexpected note to any arrangement. I wish I had thought of that! So simple-so clever!

I have always had a deep admiration for "Tramp-Art" and I think this fits into that unique category. Do you remember the doll sized furniture made from tin cans? How about photo frames made of folded cigarette packs? Dianne and I love that unique flavor! Keep your eyes open! You never know what inspiration will be around the next dustbin!

I can't say enough about how absolutely amazing this day was for me. Not only did we manage to put together a show, publicize it, and make it happen, IT WAS W-O-N-D-E-R-F-U-L!
I have met some of the most inspirational women in the world! Every one of them is creative, intelligent, gracious, and passionate about the art they create! Well the wait is just about over! We are just days from the biggest event Whimzy has had in a long time! I am so excited, so nervous, sooooooo tired! I wish I had another week, yet happy that I don't!

The invites are out, posters and postcards posted and mailed, emails going out today, decorations 85% done, and incidentals are well-incidental! It is amazing how much it takes! It has gone from a simple idea to a spectacular event in a very short period of time!

It is with happy hearts that we venture forth into Glitterfest, and become part of a community of talented, resourceful, and abundant souls. Women who love to share the gifts they have with others. Women who, on top of everything else that they must do, also find time to express themselves through art. Women who we find......inspirational!

Just another fun way to bring us all together! I picked up these really fun scrapping tags at Scrapbooking Heaven in HB the other day. I have been wrackin' my brain for ideas for Glitterfest name tags, when all of a sudden I saw these on a rack! They already have really cute sayings on them, like Art, Classique, Health Check, & 100% Perfection! I just stamped on each artist & helpers names, added some sparkles and viola! Ribbons finish the whole project off and I am DONE! Don't they look great on my Gaudy, Purple Mannequin?! ;)

Glitterfest is getting so close I decided to make something special for the artists that are participating. Our little Glitterfest Fairy is sooooooooo cute that I figured that was a great way to commemorate the day! So I put her and lots of sparkly glitter in a bottle cap and made a pin for everyone. I custom ordered the ribbon and my friend Stacey helped with the resin.....which is kinda yucky to work with, but looks great! Anywho, I think they turned out EXTRAORDINARY! Can't wait to see it all come together!

It was nothing but gushing compliments for the Spring Siren Crown Class! We had a wonderful time reliving our childhood crafting days, learning how to train your dog, eating the most decadent cupcakes in the world, and playing with sticks and paper

I have to say I was really surprised at the response this design received, but thrilled to teach the how to's to this great group of gals! Sherry Shows Us How To....

Last Saturday, I was delighted to attend a private class with Artist Extraordinaire' Sherry Goodloe. Our project was a beautiful Optical Lens necklace. I have always wanted to see how it was done & finally got the chance!

It was so much fun and I LOVE the necklace I made of my sister and me! Stacey Steimle arranged our class and brought tasty cupcakes to keep us happy! Sherry is a fun gal full of information & energy! She just makes you want to do more! She was so gracious in letting us create with all the vintage goodies she brought! And each necklace came out as unique as their owners!

Sirens of Spring

Even though it has been raining on & off lately I have noticed the tiny buds of Spring pushing through the earth and tipping the branches of the trees all around me. All of a sudden I want to explode with fresh new ideas just like those little spring buds! So to give Spring a little spring, here is my Siren Song to the rebirth of Mother Nature's beautiful green flower covered Earth!

I am teaching this projuect on March 11th at Whimzy! for those of you that want to celebrate Spring too!

My Woodland Fairy

I was out walking the other day after the rain. I noticed a ring of mushrooms to my right. I don't know if you know this but, a ring of mushrooms is called a "Fairy Ring". This is where the fairies dance at night. I quietly approached the ring and sitting on a mushroom was this cute little one named "Abeline". After telling her all about GLITTERFEST she decided to come and stay with me to see what it is all about! So, if you would like a woodland fairy of your own-she has agreed to model for you! CHA CHA CHA!

As you can see Dianne, Stacey, & I had lots of laughs at CHA! It was fabulous! Lots to do, lots to see and so very much to wish and want! So many ideas that I had to immediately journal when I got home! I think we shall be having some new and wondrous items in Whimzy! soon. Marian Ballog joined us and she did all the terrific make and takes she could hold! Gosh, the products out there are so amazing and so versatile. Anything you can think of is there to touch and try! It was a tiring but awesome day! Thanks to fab friends and the creativity of all those wonderful companies!

I guess this season just brings out the busy bee in me! Last year Dianne and I bought this huge lot of antique Frozen Charlottes on Ebay. As I understand it, they were buried under an old factory in Germany. They are broken and discolored and AWESOME! So here is my Valentine for those unloved vintage throw-a-ways! Snow Queen Crown Crazy!

Hey! I had a wonderful glitter-filled class last eve and Marilyn joined me for the fun. It took nearly the full 3 hours to complete this sparkly crown! Treasures from Irvine!

Dianne & I made it to Irvine last week & look what I found! These cute littLe figurines! I love the little Siamese dancers! They will be put into a collage soon, holding up....hmmm... a delectible chocolate truffle! And these lovely "Howdy" girls might be holding lollipos! Can you tell I have been watching what I eat? Ha! Snow Fairies Abound!

I know, I know, here in the land of perpetual sunshine(ha ha!) we don't see much rain let alone snow! But there is something about the onset of the Christmas season that just makes me want to put white and glitter all over EVERYTHING! So, in honor of the season I took some very old and beat-up, oops! I mean Vintage, trays and trapped a little snow fairy inside. She is very cute and helped me satisfy the glitter urge that keeps me awake at night! My apologies for the photos. I do try but it doesn't always work! Oh, I also trapped a few of these little treasures in jars! No pics so you will just have to come to the store to see them!

Whimzy had a PARTY!

I can't believe that Dianne and I have been tending the shop for 4 years already! It has just whizzed by for me! On Saturday we hosted a little party to celebrate another wonderful year with our friends. So many great people stopped by and visited throughout the day. We had a tasty buffet of all our favorites including rosemary cashews (always a hit!), cupcakes (can't go wrong there!), and some of the most decadent cheeses I have ever had! Dianne is so great at putting things together!

Kim Kostka of Saltwater Studio stopped in and let me say, I really like that girl. She is super talented and so willing to share!
I am looking forward to some big plans with her
and Whimzy!

We also had our first Artist's trunk show! Jennifer Dimas was here with a magical assortment of her bejeweled treasures. Jennifer has been creating for Whimzy since 2005. Her vintage jewelery bracelets and necklaces are not only scrumptous to wear but, the have history! She also makes
jeweled bottles. Each piece features a menagerie of findings that just work wonders together!

All in all, it was a very successful day! Great friends, tasty food, and most of all a celebration of heart, soul, and connections that Whimzy has given us back. It is the people we meet, the friends we make, and the stories we share that makes all the hard work worth it!

Ho! Ho! Ho! It's Halloween!

Yes, it's that time again!
Whimzy is now sporting not only Halloween, but Christmas too! We have some truly UNIQUE holiday items that I am sure you'll want to see! Artist J'me Santos has brought us some whimzical Halloween collage tins. Each one with it's own character and personality add something really fun to any holiday collection. I was industrious enough to put together a few Halloween crowns and party hats. "PMEsther" was an idea I had brewing for months and finally came to fruition! "Queen of the Cauldron" will be the crown we re-create for the October 15th crown class at Whimzy. Dianne has been busy too! She has lovingly put together a collection of vintage bottles full of ghoulies and creepies. Some have rhinestone eyes, some have crowns, and she has even done some custom casting for
the stoppers on a portion of the bottles as well!
Needless to say Christmas is bright and vintage and spark-o-ly too! The shop really looks magical right now so if your in the hood-

It's getting a little SPOOKY around here! Last week we spent three days flipping the shoppe and bring out all the creepy Halloween treasures! Both Dianne & I love this time of year! I thought I could feel it in the air last week, but this week all I feel is HOT! This is a shot of the "Little Church" in our parking lot and it's daily visitor! This huge Raven likes to perch on the top of the cross and "sing"! Very Halloweeny!

This is a moth found on my neighbors front porch. After searching the web I found the name of this beauty is "Black Witch Moth". Very funny considering Halloween is my friend least favorite holiday! This sucker was about 6" across and very pretty. It stayed for about a day and 1/2 and then disappeared into the night! Very Halloweeny!

I've been busy....again!

I have been very dedicatedly been busy. I have lost weight from being busy. My brain is oozing with ideas and visions of what's next! I LOVE that feeling! The only thing is I don't want to do anything else! This includes-cooking, cleaning, straightening, gardening, snacking, shopping, & sleeping! The necklaces are very royal, very fun! And do you remember the Harlequin dolls of the 8o's? Dianne found these, ripped off their ugly clownish garb, & I made them new clothes and gave them all festive party hats!

This is just some of what I am up to-the rest is a surprize for Fall!

My Art Box

This is my art box. This once ment to be a tackle box was bought for me when I started college. Needless to say it has been my friend for many years. When you open the latches they "click" and kind of swing around.

Sometimes they get stuck and you have to try again.

It smells like pencils and acrylics, and ink. It is stained with oil pastels and gunky art gum erasers. But...it has stayed with me all this time to occasionally be re-born as a carrier of whatever-suits-my-fancy.

In its former life it held beading supplies-at least on side of it did. It has recently been reincarnated as my collage carrier. As you can see it is full of treasure just waiting to be attached to some wonderful keep-me-up-all-night concoction. I took some time to organize the bits and pieces today. It is the kind of activity that makes your mind go quiet. There's not much going on in my brain most days, but putting pretty things in their cubbies just puts me at peace. Of course now that my favorite college buddy and my fun collection of artful things are in order I don't want to mess them up! I know that tonight in that twilight sleepy time, memories of today will become the inspirations for tomorrow and I will be making a new mess of things soon!

The Junque Girls Craft Guild

Well the Whimzy Girls have been up to no good! We got together with Stacey of Country Roads to spend a long awaited afternoon crafting! What a great way to spend the day! She has a beautiful home, yard & dog! It has been so long since we could all get together that the artistic juice cup raneth over.

Stacey worked on Shell bottles and a really fantastic shell covered cross. Dianne made these wonderful Pootie bottles, and I did coffee filter flowers. First attempt for sure, but I think they might find their way onto a crown or two! See our visual feast of fancy!

I'm the new Lunch Lady!

Well what-a-ya know! I have just completed my first week of being an official "Lunch Lady" for GGUSD! For those of you who don't know me, this is the first full week of work I have done in probably 10 or so years. I am a Mom who volunteers at school, but as far as an outside job it has been awhile.

Am I tired? Oh Yeah! But it was interesting and somewhat fun. The people I have been working with are really terrific! And very helpful too! I don't like wearing a hairnet at all!!!

And I am rather blessed in the chest department so-with the addition of some cat's eye glasses I really do look like that scary lunch lady we all remember!

Life is short! Wear a crown......while serving up lunch!

Inspirational women

Well tomorrow is Mother's day, and of course my Mom is one of the driving forces behind the person I have come to be. I am grateful for all she has given me and look forward to spending time with her tomorrow.

Their are 2 other wonderful women I would like to pay homage to as well. In the photo the person on the left is my sissy Dianne. She has been a huge part of my life in so many ways. My maid of honor, my childrens crazy aunty, my motivator to get my artistic act together, & more recently my very bestest friend. I can't tell you the amount of time we spend talking to eachother & laughing together each day! And who better to snap me out of a funk and hold me accountable for who I am.

The person in the middle is my cousin, Erin. We were married about the same time. We had our first born sons about the same time. We had our second born daughters about the same time, and then she had another daughter and I fell behind alittle. Then I had another daughter and then to top it off she had yet another daughter. For those of you that have lost count that's Erin 4 kids and me 3! So we have shared the bond of motherhood for almost 16 years now. She has been a wonderful support system for me. When I thought I was crazy I would talk to her and find out she was crazy too! It was so nice to have another person going through the same stages with me. We have learned so much from each other and she has enriched my life tremendously!

So to these 2 women, one who is an Aunty and one who is a fellow Mom-I salute you with all my heart, I praise you with the song of angels (Aaaaaaaaaaaaahhh! You have to make the sound!) and I thank you both for the friendship and love you have blessed me with for so many wonderful years. HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY!

Pretty Flowers

Yes, the yard has been calling me. Like a faint sirens voice beckoning me out into her overgrown depths.
In answer to her I have pulled, trimmed, hacked in some cases, primped, and planted so she can shine with all her glory. She is doing just that right now. The birds are singing and eating and eating and eating! I discovered a crew of grossbeaks in the yard this weekend and are they beautiful. Orangey-yellow with stripes and everything! YAY!

I was slso inspired to create more hats and crowns. "Queen of the Sea" came out better than I had expected.
I am very happy with it and will be taking it to Whimzy to join the rest this week. I hope you all have a beautiful garden to enjoy and inspire you. And stop by the shop when you are in town!

Crown Making 101

Crown classes have started at Whimzy! I have gotten my act together...finally and come up with a schedule. It has been something I have wanted to do for a while, but I guess my brain had to work through some things. Anyway, each class is 6 people, 6pm to 9pm, yummy snack & a beverage, for $55.00. The Grand Re-Opening

Well, we have just finished with our Grand re-Opening Celebration! It was a wonderful success, but boy, Di & I are tired out! It was so great of everyone to visit and such a pleasure for us to get to visit with you! Whimzy received may "ooo's" & "awww's" and business was brisk! We featured some of our favorite treats lime meltaways, Martha's Sugar cookies and refreshing strawberry lemonade along with lots of candy, crackers n' cheese & mini cupcakes YUM!

Spring is Sprunging!

Oh! I can't believe that it is already spring! Not only are the Daffodils up but, flowers are blooming at Whimzy! as well. The Easter decorations are all out and really fabulous! They all have a bit of vintage flair and so remind me of the baskets we always got as kids. Fuzzy chicks, foil eggs, and an Avon trinket! I wanted to bring them all home with me! Anyway this very chic floral lamp is very springy too! I love it, and I know it will find a good home! We are currently working on forming classes for some of the handmade items in the shoppe. I will keep you posted! Spring has sprung! YAY!

Crown me Baby!

Look what I did! Dianne and I decided it would add a great touch of "Whimzy!" to the shop if I painted in a crown over the door. I do agree, it does add that special something!

The other day I had a woman in the store and she was admiring the selection of crowns and tiaras we offer. I was telling here that every girl needs a crown to take a bath in. What else would you pair with chocolates and mimosas!? She looked at me funny and I said"Life's to short!" She replied"so wear a crown!" Whimzy's new mantra!

I have had so much fun creating these cute little party hats! I have using what ever I could find and in a major surge of artistic musings made about 7 different pieces.

I love the feeling of inspiration that takes over and commands you to think of nothing else for days. It's like a binge, only with glitter and rhinestones!

The shop is looking fabulous and we owe it all to our friends Stacey and Bud. Party Hats off to you guys! I love you!

After the Show!

Welllll!!!

We just finished the LA Mart experience and we have some absolutely wonderful things coming! I think spring is gonna be big! It was just Di and me and very laid back. I have to hand it to some of the artists up there-they really put it all on the line. I am talking about a whole floor they devote to "temporaries", generally little companies/artists showing there wares for us to buy. It was great, and really nice to see how people get their products noticed. We also found some artist's hand made pieces in one of our favorite showrooms. Again, nice to see little people getting into the big retail door. We concentrated on items made in the USA, which seem to be growing in variety and selection. Some of these beautiful things will be in the store in the next 6 to 8 weeks. I will keep you posted! No pics of the mart just of the shop!

Here at Last!

Well, I finally made it here! Dianne and I have been continuously working to re-open "Whimzy" and that finally happened last week. Things are starting to come around, YAY! By-the-way, I have to give a huge shout out to Bud (Buttermilk Sky) and Stacy(Country Roads) for all the fabulous help(&fun) in getting Whimzy all together. Dianne and I owe you two BIGTIME!
